Barbering

Barbers have been practicing their craft since the Middle Ages. Up until the 18th century, though, barbering involved dentistry, blood-letting, minor operations, and even bone-setting. In the present day, barbers typically stick to shaving and trimming beards, cutting and dressing hair, and sometimes offering coloring, bleaching, highlighting, and perming services.

Want to become licensed in barbering? First, you'll need to pass written and practical exams given by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). Try your hand at NIC's sample test questions to see if you have what it takes to pursue barbering.

1. What is the function of sebum?
a. To dry the skin
b. To harden the skin
c. To cleanse the skin
d. To lubricate the skin

2. The action of chemical hair relaxers causes the hair to
a. stop growing.
b. harden and set.
c. form new curls.
d. soften and swell.

3. The size of a razor refers to the blade's
a. design.
b. thickness.
c. sharpness.
d. length and width.

How did you do? If you answered "d" for all three questions, pursue barber training to secure a time-honored barbering career.
