Holistic Health |
Holistic health practitioners look at the whole person when treating an illness. That means paying attention to the body, mind, emotions, and spirit--not just the symptoms.
Holistic health professions encompass everything from acupuncture and massage therapy to nutrition and yoga instruction. Some holistic health practitioners have no tools other than their own body and mind. Some have needles or biofeedback machines; others utilize various natural substances for you to taste, smell, and touch.
One of the benefits of the practice of holistic health is that the techniques involved tend to be less invasive and have fewer side effects than in traditional medicine. However, even holistic health practitioners acknowledge the need for traditional medicine. If you break your arm, for instance, you'll probably get better results in an emergency room than a chiropractor's office.
That being said, in some holistic health practices, patients may experience a miraculous breakthrough in one session. In others, they may need to make a major lifestyle change to truly experience the benefits of therapy. But in all holistic health practices, patients not only have a say in their treatment, they also play a key role in their own healing. |
