Massage Therapy Schools |
If you're considering pursuing massage training, you're certainly not alone. According to Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) surveys, the number of state-approved massage therapy schools increased from 637 in 1998 to 1,529 in 2007. These surveys also show explosive growth (107.1 percent from 1998 to 2004) in enrollment and graduation numbers, with the ABMP school database peaking at 1,582 massage therapy schools in 2006.
With the increase in massage therapy schools and the greater number of students enrolling, it's no surprise that the number of massage therapists in the U.S. continues to rise. According to ABMP's analysis, there were 241,058 massage therapists in the U.S. as of January 2006, up from 137,390 in January 1999.
And, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there should be jobs for all these massage therapists: Employment is expected to increase faster than average (18 to 26 percent) between 2004 and 2014 as more people learn about the benefits of massage therapy.
Clients are certainly lining up for massage therapy services. According to ABMP, consumers receive approximately 230 million massage sessions annually, making massage therapy an $11 billion to $15 billion industry.
