The first step to becoming an esthetician is to enroll in an accredited esthetics program. There, you will receive the training you need to meet your state's particular requirements for licensure as an esthetician.
Esthetics programs provide practical training in acne treatments, aromatherapy and European facial treatments, back treatments, body bronzer, chemical peeling, depilatories, exfoliation, eyebrow and eyelash tinting, eyelash perming, facial waxing, false eyelash application, full-body waxing, lymphatic drainage of the face and neck, machine-aided facials, makeup application, manicures, paraffin baths, pedicures, rosacea treatments, and specialty masks.
Programs in esthetics are also packed with classroom theory, including: anatomy, physiology, and histology of the skin; antioxidants; business of esthetics; chemical peels; chemistry; cosmetic procedures; electricity basics; enzymes; esthetician career planning; facial theory; free radicals; hair removal; makeup theory; pre- and post-operative care; product ingredients; product sales and services; professionalism; sanitation and disinfection; skin analysis; skin care history; skin disorders and diseases; and theory of facial machines.
A high-level esthetics curriculum will also include paramedical training, which familiarizes you with basic equipment, treatments, and terminology used in the fields of dermatology, laser, and plastic surgery. And, this comprehensive education will afford you the opportunity to work as a licensed esthetician in the best skin care centers, spas, and physician's offices around.
